    The Destroyer.

In the bloody battle of the Pacific, one class of fighting ship took on the full ferocity of the Japanese and won. After destruction of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, the US designed and built an awesome fleet of Fletcher-class destroyers--over 370 feet long, armed with 5-inch guns, and a speed of 36 knots. Featuring interviews with sailors who served on these gladiators of the sea in the often-suicidal Pacific Theater, striking archive film, much of it in color, and detailed reenactments.

    A-10 Tankbuster.

The most feared aircraft in the Air Force arsenal, the A-10 Tankbuster was the first aircraft in US aviation history designed specifically for Close Air Support. From its first taste of battle in Desert Storm to the recent assault on Baghdad, the A-10 carries enough weaponry into battle to disable 16 main battle tanks, and with its amazing 30 millimeter 7-barrelled cannon, the "Flying Gun" dominates the skies. Features interviews with A-10 pilots, many of whom flew in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    B-52: Stratofortress.

For nearly half a century, one bomber has dominated the skies. With a maximum speed of 650 mph, a range of over 8,000 miles, and ability to drop a massive 70,000 pounds of bombs, it's the most lethal bomber in the world. This is the dramatic story of the race to produce the first intercontinental jet bomber and the success of the EM B-52 /EM --from the Cold War to its use in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan. The EM B-52 /EM 's projected combat life is until 2045--no other bomber comes close to this record.

    July 15-21

In Berlin, the Municipal Council begins confiscating property of former Nazi party members. President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill arrive in Potsdam, near Berlin, for the "Big Three" conference of the US, Britain, and Soviet Union. In London, 2,000 days of "Black Out" and "Dim Out" end as the West End turns on the lights again. The US tests the first atomic bomb at New Mexico's Alamogordo Bombing Range. In the Pacific, US navy ships launch an attack on Japan's second biggest steelworks, Muroran, at Volcano Bay on the east side of Hokkaido. At the same time, 1,000 carrier-based planes bomb six of the island's main towns. And 600 B-29 Superfortress bombers drop 4,000 tons of explosives on the Japanese cities of Choshi, Hitachi, Fukui, and Okazaki. We also highlight the Father of the Atomic Bomb. Nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer was director of the Manhattan Project, the US top-secret atom bomb research program.

    Secret U.S. Bunkers

As the Cold War reached its boiling point the US began to make plans to protect the country and the president. Elaborate defense preparations were made in the event of nuclear war. Highly secret bunkers were constructed and a covert shadow government program was born. Now these newly opened bunkers are brought into view... in some of the most unexpected places imaginable.

    Tarawa.

On November 20, 1943, one of the most ferocious battles in US history began. The target--a tiny island called Tarawa. With its vital airfield, Tarawa was the first step in the island-hopping campaign that would lead to Japan. Naval bombardment proved ineffective, landing craft got stuck on the reef, and US Marines waded ashore to face deadly Japanese fire. Japanese troops boasted that a million Americans couldn't take the island in a hundred years. The stage was set for a bloody confrontation. On the island death lurked everywhere: snipers hid in trees, the enemy buried themselves underground, and Banzai attacks came in the dead of night. It became a war of extermination--5,000 Japanese and more than a 1,000 Marines died in 76 hours of intense conflict. Using cutting-edge techniques, Oscar-winning archive film, reenactments, and interviews with men who were there, we'll tell the story of this overlooked but extraordinary battle.

    July 8 - July 14

In Indochina, Chinese forces advance rapidly eastwards and cut the last link between the Japanese army and its garrison, while the US 3rd Fleet joins the attack on Tokyo for the first time. In Berlin, US and British troops take control of their allotted sectors from the Red Army. In turn, the two countries agree to share some control with the French. General Eisenhower issues a farewell message to all Allied troops in Europe. And our "Weapon of the Week" segment examines the US Grumman F-6 Hellcat Naval Fighter-Bomber that made its operational debut in the Pacific Theater on August 31, 1943. Two years later, the Hellcat was responsible for downing 5,174 enemy aircraft, nearly 75% of the US Navy's air-to-air kills. And we remember the life of US Admiral Chester Nimitz, who as the senior US naval officer during the war in the Pacific, held more responsibility within his hands than anyone else in American naval history.

    Wings Across the World

A low-level attack on the Ploesti oil fields proves disastrous and an increasingly powerful Air Force suffers heartbreaking losses over Regensburg and Schweinfurt. Jimmy Doolittle changes fighter escort tactics, the 15th Air Force develops shuttle bombing in Italy, the Tuskegee Airmen gain fame, women come aboard, and as Germany collapses, the Air Force turns its wrath on Japan.

    German Death Trap.

The Kammhuber Line, an integrated system of air defense stretching from Denmark to Paris, protected Germany from Allied bombers and thwarted Allied intelligence efforts to crack it. But Allied scientists soon discovered the secret warning systems that detected approaching aircraft and directed German fighters to the incoming Allied bombers. We explain how the Kammhuber Line worked, how British scientists cracked the code, and how Allied flyers got through Germany's technologically advanced system.

Their life-threatening experiments will forever transform our understanding of antiquity's greatest naval inventions.

    Operation Bodyguard: D-Day Deception

Operation Overlord, the 1944 Allied invasion of Western Europe, culminated from five years of armed struggle against the Axis juggernaut. But the odds seemed stacked against a successful storming of Hitler's awesome beach defenses. To insure victory, the Allies convinced Hitler that the invasion would take place at Pas de Calais. We examine the elaborate system of hoax and deception devised by the Allies to trick the Nazis--including fake armies, dummy landing craft, and false intelligence.
