Robo-Warriors
Robo-Warriors
The U.S. military has made a major commitment to deploying and developing robots for use on the battlefield--from the highly successful bomb disposal robots, to the unmanned aerial vehicles. We'll preview the latest armed robot, with aim so accurate and deadly that it virtually never misses its target and look at the difficulties of making military vehicles driverless. The use of robots in warfare fits into some of the basic tenets of American fighting: to reduce manpower with material and to kill the enemy either at a distance or with a surrogate soldier. In the future, the Pentagon hopes to have a ratio of 4-6 robots to every human soldier. It will be the human soldiers, not the robots, according to the Department of Defense, who will continue to make decisions of life and death... at least in our lifetime. TVPG VL | CC |

The Last Days Of WWII: February 18-24.
The battle for Iwo Jima begins--one of the bloodiest of World War II. During Operation Detachment, fighting becomes a brutal frontal attack of hand-to-hand combat. Both the portable and mechanized flamethrowers as well as LVTs (Landing Vehicle, Tracked) were vital during the intense battles on the volcanic island. Meanwhile in the Philippines, US forces completely surround the center of Manila, as the tempo of the Japanese atrocities increases. Before long, General MacArthur will make an emotional return to Corregidor Island. Follow the action in this series that details, week by week, the last six months of WWII and explores the high and low points of the march to war's end. TVPG VL | CC |
The Wehrmacht: 03 - The Crimes
The Wehrmacht: 03 - The Crimes
There is hardly a subject as controversial and as hotly debated in recent years as the crimes of the Wehrmacht. More than 17 million men were part of these armed forces--and they represented a cross-section of society. In almost every German family, there was at least one soldier. The current status of research, however, leaves little doubt about the general conclusion that the list of crimes committed by the Wehrmacht is long. The attack on the Soviet Union that cost the lives of millions and millions of people was a criminal act from day one, unparalleled in modern history. The all-out war and the extent of the war crimes reached an all-time high in the East. First and foremost among them is undoubtedly the murder of Jews, in which the Wehrmacht was also involved in many different locations. TVPG VL | CC Premiere |

Not just a few, but hundreds of thousands flooded in--until there were over 400,000 Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe prisoners in the U.S. We'll meet former Nazi POWs and learn of the resentment many Americans had for Hitler's army imprisoned inside the heartland. The Last Days Of WWII: February 25-March 3.
In this episode of our series that details, week by week, the last six months of WWII, American daytime bombing and British night raids have devastated Berlin. In the Battle for the Rhineland, an estimated 8.5 million people are on the move in Germany. The backbone of the Luftwaffe, Germany's once mighty Air Force, has been broken. Hitler is now visibly shaken. On the Eastern Front, Allied leaders--British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Franklin Roosevelt, and Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin meet at Yalta, in the Russian Crimea. They agree that Germany will be conquered by summer, and begin to divide up post-war Europe. TVPG VL | CC |
The Wehrmacht: 04 - Resistance
The Wehrmacht: 04 - Resistance
During the war, the Wehrmacht was the only force powerful enough to stand up to the Nazi regime. But the opposition did not form when the dictator was celebrating his greatest military triumphs--the core of the conspiracy only consolidated after the war against the Soviet Union made the true, criminal nature of the campaign apparent. The number of Hitler's opponents grew after the defeat outside of Moscow in 1941/42, and even more so after the disaster of Stalingrad. What tipped the balance for many was the horror of the war crimes behind the front lines--crimes against civilians, mostly Jews. But the resistance within the Wehrmacht was backed by only a handful of men. The officers who eventually tried to kill Hitler and end the war on their own were lonely conspirators, who lacked public support and relied on nothing but their own sense of duty. Host R. Lee Ermey, dressed in the uniform of a Civil War Marine Corps sergeant, dedicates the entire half-hour to the Civil War, answering a slew of email questions about the guns and gear used in the War between the States. First, the Gunny performs live-fire demonstrations with four different weapons: the Union's Springfield rifle, the Confederacy's Enfield rifle, the 1842 Springfield muzzleloader, which was the last smoothbore musket used by the US military, and last but not least, a powerful cannon. Next, Lee shows viewers cavalry gear, including weapons, tack, and personal gear. In particular, we get a look at the rare 9-shot pistol called "Le Mat"--it also fired a shotgun shell for a lethal blast. Then, the Gunny cooks up some salt port and hardtack, the Civil War version of an MRE. It's 1943 and the war is not going well for the Allies. With the Nazis in firm control of Europe and the coastline, the enemy is only approachable by air. His machine--a bouncing bomb--an innovative blend of simple physics and precision flying. It's an idea so simple, yet so far-fetched that only a man supremely confident in his own talent could persuade the Royal Air Force to use it. On May 16, 1943, 19 bomber crews embark on one of the riskiest missions of WWII. Patton 360: Leading the Charge
France, August 1944: As American forces tear through western France, Patton's superiors order him to stop before completely trapping an entire German Army. The Third Army reaches the outskirts of Paris, but Patton is denied the glory of liberating the city when the Free French Army is chosen instead to enter the city first. Patton 360: On Hitler's Doorstep
Patton's blitzkrieg is so successful that his army outruns its own supply lines. Despite being short on fuel and ammunition, he invades the province of Lorraine, hoping to cross into Germany before Christmas. But delays from the fuel shortages have given the Germans time to regroup. Stubborn German defenses at the Moselle River are finally crushed, and the Third Army captures the key city of Nancy. Then Adolph Hitler demands that his generals launch a major counterattack and a furious tank battle erupts near the town of Arracourt. Despite the inferiority of their tanks, the Americans emerge triumphant. But Patton remains stuck in Lorraine, just a few miles closer to Germany than he was at the beginning of the month. Patton 360: Siege Warfare
The slow but brutal slugfest in Lorraine continues as Patton orders his men to take the heavily fortified city of Metz. The thick forts that surround the city and the castle-like walls around Metz prove to be more than a match for American armor, and the siege goes on for weeks. Ammunition supplies run so low that Patton's men resort to using captured German shells. After commencing the largest artillery barrage in Third Army's history, the Americans finally subdue the city's defenders on November 21st. TVPG VL | CC Premiere |

Silent Service: The Torpedoes of WWII.
Only a few weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the US Navy experienced a failure of critical technology--the torpedoes that armed its fleet of submarines were defective. The ensuing debacle ranks as one of the great near disasters of WWII. We'll see how the exigencies of war clashed with entrenched bureaucracies and egos of the naval ordnance establishment. After two years of frustration the submariners prevailed, and with effective weapons, went on to achieve remarkable results. TVPG VL | CC |
Weird Weapons: The Axis.
Weird Weapons: The Axis.
Between 1939 and `45, the world was locked in a nightmare struggle of unprecedented ferocity. When the smoke from WWII cleared, bizarre stories emerged of extraordinary armaments dreamt up by both sides' most inventive minds--weird weapons unlike anything before. New ways of bringing destruction to the enemy were born of desperation and wild imagination. And in a world gone mad, nothing seemed too strange to try. Axis powers tested a strange range of weapons: a vortex cannon designed to tear wings off aircraft, an assault rifle that could shoot round corners, a death ray that could boil people alive, and most bizarre of all, an army in space.
The Silent Service: Attack Plans of WWII.
Examines the evolution of the strategy and tactics used by US submarines in the war against Japan. Conceived as scouts for the surface fleet, the fleet of boats of the "silent service" found their true calling as heirs to the commerce-raiders of the American Revolution and Civil War. By embracing the once-condemned practice of "unrestricted submarine warfare", these stealthy predators of the deep virtually swept the Pacific of Japanese maritime shipping. TVPG VL | CC |

Man, Moment, Machine: Dam Buster: WWII's Bouncing Bomb.
It's 1943 and the war is not going well for the Allies. With the Nazis in firm control of Europe and the coastline, the enemy is only approachable by air. Engineer Barnes Wallis thinks he can turn the war around. His idea--wipe out the heart of the Nazi industrial machine by destroying Germany's great dams. WWII's D-Day Invasion would be history's largest seaborne assault--over 4,000 ships carrying 170,000 troops. A secret weapon was to lead the way: the Duplex Drive (DD) Tank--Shermans modified to "swim" to shore. Scheduled to hit the beach before foot soldiers, without them the infantry would be sitting ducks. And that's what happened at Omaha Beach--28 out of 30 DD Tanks sank before reaching shore. The Color Of War: At Ease.
The Color Of War: At Ease.
It's been said that war is 90% boredom mixed with 10% sheer terror. The Allied servicemen of WWII spent a majority of their time in what normally would be called "everyday" activities. Eating, sleeping, reading and writing letters--trying to snatch a few moments of enjoyment in the midst of the titanic conflict. Veterans describe how they spent those brief interludes that became treasured wartime memories. With vivid color film unearthed from archives and personal collections. Peter Coyote narrates.

Their planes fly under cover of darkness 100 feet off the ground, across the English Channel, over Holland, and into the heart of Germany. Man, Moment, Machine: The Higgins Landing Craft.
In the early morning of June 6, 1944, history's largest amphibious invasion force amassed off the Normandy coast. Hundreds of 36-foot shoebox-shaped boats, known as LCVPs, or Higgins Boats, bob in the waves. These landing craft, which deliver soldiers to the beach, are designed and built largely through the efforts of one man--Andrew Jackson Higgins. We examine Higgins' life and study the boat that could land a platoon of 36 men with equipment, or a jeep and 12 men. By 4 AM on June 6, 1944, the first wave of Higgins Boats is loaded with troops for the 12-mile journey to the Omaha and Utah Beaches. The first wave of landings is close to disastrous, but as wave after wave of Higgins Boats unload, the tide begins to turn. TVPG VL | CC Premiere |

In the Battle for the Rhineland, an estimated 8.5 million people are on the move in Germany. The backbone of the Luftwaffe, Germany's once mighty Air Force, has been broken. Hitler is now visibly shaken.
Veterans describe how they spent those brief interludes that became treasured wartime memories. With vivid color film unearthed from archives and personal collections. Peter Coyote narrates. Secret Russian Aircraft of WWII.
History has overlooked the unimaginable hardships Russian designers faced under the paranoid rule of Josef Stalin. Frequent purges represented a constant threat. Yet, in spite of the ever-present danger, Soviet aircraft designers mastered technical hurdles astonishing even by today's standards. This hour features extensive archive images of never-before-seen aircraft and the designers who brought them to life. The innovative aircraft profiled include a swept-wing EM Delta /EM aircraft design; a rocket-powered fighter; a long distance fixed-wing aircraft with features later incorporated in the EM U-2 /EM spyplane; a flying tank prototype; a submarine-bomber combination; and a canard-wing aircraft. And we highlight remarkable aircraft launched after Stalin's death in 1953, like the delta-winged supersonic EM Concordski /EM and the world's largest plane, the EM Antonov 124 Ruslan /EM .
